Pleasant Places Therapy Centre took autism awareness day to the streets of Portharcourt,Nigeria. World autism day always celebrated on the 2nd of April every year. The awareness campaign took place today in respect to the world autism day tomorrow.
Autism spectrum disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child’s ability to communicate and interact with others.It also includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests and activities. These issues cause significant impairment in social, occupational and other areas of functioning.
The atmosphere was set this morning Saturday 1st 2017 by 7 am for the autism awareness campaign on the streets of Porthacourt, where so many individual were present to show there support and spread the news about what autism is all about and how to identify it, to let the society know its is not a disease but a developmental disability that can be managed with proper care and love.
The student of the University of Porthacourt from the Department of Educational Psychology/Guidance and Counselling where present and also join the autism walk that way showing there support for the course.
Autism is a different ability and children on the autism spectrum can live a functional and independent life. Early intervention by trained and equipped personnel is key.
Stop the stigma, stop hiding the children indoors. Autism is not witchcraft and it is not a curse from God.
